On Friday 18 October, teams from across Oldham met to do battle and the chance to be crowned Oldham Schools Debating Matters Champion. The first ever Oldham Schools Championship took place at the directors’ boxes at Oldham Athletic Football Club with teams from The Blue Coat School, Compton House School, Oldham Hulme Grammar School and Oldham Sixth Form College.
The four teams debated Humanity should fear advances in AI and Smartphones should be banned in the classroom. Facing fierce competition from the three other schools, Crompton House impressed the judges with their strong arguments and ability to draw on their research to win the championship as well as awarding pupil Brooke Crotty the award for best individual debater.
Best Individual Debater, Brooke Crotty (pictured above holding a Debating Matters mug), said:
‘I absolutely loved it but I was terrified at first and I thought it was an amazing opportunity.’
The Oldham Schools DM organisers would like to thank all the judges, chairpersons, teachers and pupils for taking part in the competition, including Jatinder from Eton Star College for taking on a judging role. Special thanks to Oldham Athletic Football Club and Debating Matters for their support.
