Tony Gilland

teacher of maths and economics; Associate Fellow, Academy of Ideas

Tony is Curriculum Manager for Mathematics at MidKent College having previously taught maths and economics in two Kent grammar schools.

Prior to teaching Tony was the director of the Debating Matters competition, overseeing its growth into a UK competition for nearly 300 schools and its expansion to India through a partnership with the British Council.

In 2020, Tony developed a highly successful new pilot debating tournament – DMGBIN – for 16- to 18-year- old students in India and the UK which was inspired by his work at Debating Matters.

Tony is himself a keen debater and has organised many public discussion events, as well as publications, about the intersection between science and society at times of public controversy, especially in relation to genetics, public health and climate change.

Tony is an Associate of the Academy of Ideas and holds a degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Oxford. He is a member of the Kent & Medway Maths Hub Strategic Board.
