COMPETITION YEAR
2011
UNIVERSITY
BSc Chemistry and Maths, Durham University

Debating Matters allows you to continue engaging with new ideas even after you have left the competition and take on board different points of view that may be out of your ‘comfort zone’.

Personally, as a sciences student, it is not every day that I have the opportunity to discuss issues such as free speech, criminal responsibility and the merits of art in society with people who know about the subject. Listening to arguments, during, and after, the debates has dramatically altered some of my views.

However, by far the most enjoyable part of being an alumnus of the competition is the wide variety of people you get to meet during the course of the competition. I’ve had discussions with judges about fields that I barely knew existed before, had the opportunity to know the great team at Debating Matters HQ better and been able to watch as competitors improve dramatically over the course of two years. Additionally, the Alumni Network allows you to meet people from a variety of different universities, and who, over time, you build great relationships with. All of this makes Debating Matters an excellent opportunity for networking in preparation for leaving university!
