ALUMNI

James King
The Burgate School & Sixth Form Centre

I’ve personally found that the skills of research, analysis, and nuanced argument helped me no end in my interviews at university – in particular, an interview with a notoriously combative tutor became a lot less nerve-wracking once I realised it was essentially a debate, and about a motion I’d already covered in Debating Matters!

COMPETITION YEAR
2012
UNIVERSITY
Geography, St Edmunds Hall - University of Oxford

Debating Matters was one of the most significant and enjoyable parts of my time at sixth form and provided me with some of the best experiences over those two years.

I joined the alumni programme fairly rapidly after being knocked out of my final DM round, and would recommend it to anyone who’s been involved in the competition. It’s immensely rewarding, really good fun, and I’ve been able to travel all over the country and make some great friends. For me, personally, it is good to be able to put something back into the competition, seeing as I got so much out of it as a competitor, and at the risk of sounding careerist, it’s a very good thing to have on your CV, though obviously that’s just a useful benefit.
